A Statement of Faith or a measuring stick of Christianity?
As my church gathers to draw inspiration from a newly edited “faith creed”, some rays of hope shine in the dark spots of a history full of bandwagon aculturism, legalist soteriology, and a rapidly degenerating sense of community.
- A cooperative willingness to write in a flat-table setting, with all members contributing and critiquing.
- An intense desire to dialogue rather than eliminate controversial areas of theology.
- A view of the future document as a helpful tool in explaining the church's mission and calling in the world rather than a measuring rod to judge who's a heretic and who's not.
- A willingness to put emphasis on a lifestyle theology rather than using it as a straw man to discourage ecumenical dialogue.
