Cynical in the Struggle for Peace
Nate makes a truly honest plea in So It's Come To This...
I hate to say, its becoming harder to care. Its becoming harder to care about injustice when I have found increasingly that injustice is the norm. So 12 families just lost their sons and daughters. Big deal. So 12 mothers are looking inside their child's empty room, knowing that it will never again be filled. So the dreams of 12 individuals will never be fulfilled because of a decision that people they never even met made. Big deal. The reason why the Iraq conflict has failed to come to a conclusion 6 years after President Bush declared "Mission Accomplished" is not because we are not good enough at waging war. We do nothing better. Its not because we're not spending enough money. We're spending so much it is making our economy unsustainable. The reason why the Iraq conflict has failed to conclude is because our political leaders have dedicated every moment of their existence not to waging peace, but to waging war. They can wage war, but they do not know how to end war. They do not know how to bring about peace.
It's so easy to pursue peace when the public is for it. But actually caring about the injustice––even after we've been bombarded by horrible things for years in the media is quite harder. On a normal day, I don't have to worry about bombs or guns or war. I echo Nate's confession, "I'm becoming cynical".
